Janis T. Pruss
Manager, Crop Management Program / Senior Instructor in Agronomy
Responsibilities and Interests:
As manager of the crop management program, I coordinate Pennsylvania Crop Management Association activities, plan and implement educational opportunities for personnel providing crop management services, and assist producers and crop management consultants in implementing crop information management systems.
In May, 2003, I completed my doctoral program in Agronomy. My thesis research assessed the value of field-specific crop management records in Pennsylvania. It demonstrated that Crop Management Database (CropMD) software, used by hundreds of crop producers in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Vermont and New Jersey, is valuable for helping producers establish historic records for guiding future management choices and for documenting the impact of extension programming. The research also demonstrated aggregated data could be used to analyze how practices based on small plot research on a single production practice work when integrated into the management system of a given area.
This Spring I will teach Agronomy 425, Field Crop Management. I will use case studies documented by producers using CropMD software to help students acquire fundamental knowledge of grain production within the context of environment and farm profitability.
