Greater soil productivity - Benefits of Cover Crops

Excellent Growth of Corn in Crownvetch

All of the above practices improve soil productivity. If an ever growing population is to be fed, productivity will have to increase, making it necessary in the future to farm marginal soils whose productivity is already low. Such soils benefit most from cover crops, but cover crop use on better soils will also reverse the downward trend in productivity as a result of losses in organic matter, nutrients and topsoil.
