Penn State Graduate Degree Programs - Environmental Pollution Control
The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences participates in this intercollege master's degree program, available also at Penn State Harrisburg. The EPC program deals with various aspects of the control of air and water pollution and the disposal of solid wastes. Graduate instruction is under the direction of an interdisciplinary faculty committee and the departments participating in the program. The graduate faculty consists of members who have teaching and research interests in the area of environmental pollution control. Currently, 39 faculty from 16 departments representing six colleges are participating in the program at the University Park campus. A student is affiliated with one of these departments on the basis of his or her specific area of interest and is advised by an EPC faculty member in that department.
Requirements for the M.S. Degree
All candidates are required to take a core course in each of four environmental areas - air, water, solid waste management, hazardous waste, and policy/risk - and one credit of the EPC 590 seminar for a minimum core requirement of 12 credits. All but six of the total 30 credits must be selected from a recommended course list. If the option to prepare a thesis is selected, students must schedule at least 12 credits at the 500 level, plus 6 600-level thesis research credits. Students who select the nonthesis option must schedule at least 15 credits at the 500 level and must submit a master's paper.
Application materials are available on the EPC Program Web site at http://epc.cas.psu.edu/Application.html.
